Beginners of research and pedagogical work at the field of plant physiology

in Slovenia

Nada GOGALA

Abstract

First Slovenian researchers working in the field of plant physiology are from

the beginning of the previous century. These were Dr. Alojzij Jenčič and Dr. Fran Jesenko. The latter was also the first university teacher of plant physiology at the newly founded University of Ljubljana in the year 1919. After the Second World War, Dr. Miran Vardjan followed by Dr. Nada Gogala had been teaching this field of botany since 1960 at the Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana at the Department of Biology, and Dr. Janez Furlan at the Department of Agriculture. Dr. Božidar Krajnčič has been teaching plant physiology since 1970. He had begun at the Pedagogical Academy (later Pedagogical Faculty) in Maribor and in 1978 he continued at the former Higher School of Agriculture. He is still active at the Faculty of Agriculture and System Sciences, University of Maribor. The researches of Slovenian plant physiologists have been mainly directed to the study of growth and development of green plants, mycorrhyza, regulation of flowering and mineral nutrition. During the last decades, in various institutes new research teams were founded working in plant physiology and ecophysiology. Due to intensive development of molecular biology former distinctions between various fields of research in experimental plant biology, symbiosis and pathogen organisms are disappearing. There are more and more researchers working in this field that is reflected in number of members of Slovenian Society of Plant Physiology which to this day includes 87 members.

The history of the Department of Biology at the University of Maribor

Dušan DEVETAK, Leon SENČIČ

Abstract

A brief review of history of the Department of Biology at the University of Maribor is presented. Biology programme started at the Pedagogical Academy in 1961. The Academy was transformed into the Pedagogical Faculty in 1985. In 2006, its Department of Biology was shifted to the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The recent research and educational programmes cover the following fields of biology: biochemistry, botany, plant ecology and plant physiology, zoology, animal ecology, animal physiology and didactics of biology.
